Farmers’ Clubs Thyolo and Mzimba Macadamia Nuts

The Macadamia Value Chain enhancement project started in August 2016, with the training of field officers and mobilization of the 3,000 farmers who are part of the project.

The goal is to “Enhance the macadamia value chain in Malawi” which falls under the Public – Private Partnership (PPP) funded by the Dutch Government via Sympany of the Netherlands the partners are Intersnack, Sable Farming Company Ltd., DAPP Malawi and the smallholder farmers. The project lifeline is approximately 7 years running from January 2016 to August 2022 and involves a flow of a well-developed value chain in Macademia production targeting 3000 female farmers who will plant macadamia tree orchard (each 100 trees/0, 4 hectare) in Thyolo and Mzimba area. Sable Farming will establish buying centres with silo storage and they will expand processing capacity in anticipation of increased nut yield by the new producers but also to consolidate skills and knowledge on macadamia agronomy and management, a module will be developed and included in the one year agricultural course at the Mikolongwe Vocational School.
Sable Farming Company has solid experience with producing macadamia tree seedlings and will produce 303.000 seedlings for this project, which are to be given to the farmers. DAPP Malawi organizes and trains the farmers in Clubs (25 to 50 farmers) in the respective areas until the trees produce nuts after five years.
