Farmers’ Clubs Thyolo and Mzimba Macadamia Nuts

The Macadamia Value Chain enhancement project started in August 2016, with the training of field officers and mobilization of the 3,000 farmers who are part of the project.
The project’s goal is to “Enhance the Macadamia Value Chain in Malawi” which falls under the Public – Private Partnership (PPP) funded by the Dutch Government via Sympany of the Netherlands the partners are Intersnack, Sable Farming Company Ltd., DAPP Malawi and the smallholder farmers.
The project lifeline is approximately 7 years running from January 2016 to August 2022. It involves a flow of a well-developed value chain in Macadamia production targeting 3000 female farmers who will plant macadamia tree orchards (each 100 trees/0, 4 hectare) in Thyolo and Mzimba area.
In the partnership, Sable Farming is expected to establish buying centres with silo storage as well as expand processing capacity in anticipation of increased nut yield by the new producers. Sable Farming Company has solid experience with producing macadamia tree seedlings and will be producing up to 303.000 seedlings for this project, which are to being provided to the farmers to grow.
DAPP Malawi’s role is to organize and train the 3000 farmers in Clubs (25 to 50 farmers) in the respective areas until the trees produce nuts after five years. A module to consolidate skills and knowledge on macadamia agronomy and management was developed and included in the one year agricultural course at DAPP Mikolongwe Vocational School.
