Just a year ago, 21-year-old Catherine Nyirongo spent most of her days at home, uncertain about what the future held. Growing up in a small farming family in Traditional Authority Mzukuzuku, she lacked the financial and social support needed to continue her education.
“I thought my life would always be like this — stuck at home with nothing to look forward to,” she recalls.
But everything changed when she enrolled at DAPP Mzimba Teacher Training College through the Skills for Youth Empowerment Project, funded by Chiesa Valdese via Humana Italy. The project opened a door Catherine never imagined possible.
During her training, she discovered a deep passion for tailoring and fashion design. The course equipped her with practical, marketable skills — empowering her not just to learn, but to build a future.
Today, Catherine confidently demonstrates the tailoring techniques she mastered during the programme — a powerful reflection of her growth and determination.

Upon graduation, participants in the project received start-up toolkits, made possible through the support of UGI Company Limited. For Catherine, receiving her sewing machine marked more than the completion of training — it symbolised independence and possibility.
“This is more than just a sewing machine,” Catherine says with a smile. “It’s my chance to change my life, support my family, and give back to my community.”

Now filled with renewed hope, Catherine dreams of establishing a successful tailoring business in Mzimba and inspiring other young women to pursue their ambitions, regardless of the challenges they face.
Her journey is a powerful reminder that when young people are given skills, opportunity, and support, they can transform not only their own lives — but their communities as well.
